Embracency is live online improvisational music. A music making practice that embraces the challenge of time delay, caused by internet latency.

In 2020-21 we adapted to embracing the time lag characteristic of making music live online. This had ramifications for the type of music we made. The Embracency sessions took place online from five different cities where we ZRI musicians were based, with a live online audience from around the world. This created a musical world where each performer and listener heard a unique collaboration; the coming together of sounds was slightly different for us all.

Two pieces are included here. For the first piece we all started our metronomes on the same speed and improvised based on their interlacing patterns. The second piece is an improvisation prompted by an audience member’s narration of their morning stroll.

These experimentations also resulted in a collaboration with visual artist Elena Adamou who added another layer onto these soundworlds with her Time Keepers (link below).
