ZRI stands for Zum Roten Igel - The Red Hedgehog Tavern, where Brahms went to hear gypsy musicians play in Vienna. His soulful clarinet quintet is here re-scored in its entirety to embrace accordion and santouri (a type of cymbalom), interleaved with the high-energy Klezmer and gypsy folk music that inspired it and which Brahms loved so much. Setting this romantic masterpiece firmly back in its traditional context evokes a fin-de-siècle viennese soundworld that links Brahms not just back to the classics but also forward to the avant-garde of Klimt , Freud and Schoenberg.
